The Los Angeles Angels are preparing for an important offseason as they aim to strengthen their pitching staff without draining their farm system. With a disappointing 54-73 record, the Angels are already focusing on the 2025 season and need to make strategic decisions to improve.

Their current pitching situation is troubling, with a team ERA of 4.55, placing them among the worst in Major League Baseball. Of the five pitchers in their rotation with at least 12 starts, only Tyler Anderson seems to be a dependable option moving forward. PJ Potter of Halo Hangout suggests that one potential target for the Angels is Nestor Cortes, a left-handed pitcher with the New York Yankees.
At 29, Cortes is coming off a strong season and might be available for trade as the Yankees look to reduce payroll. Cortes has had a solid year, recording 137 strikeouts over 148.1 innings with a 4.00 ERA. His performance includes 12 starts of six or more innings, demonstrating his ability to handle a heavy workload.
Cortes is also a budget-friendly option, earning $3.95 million this season and remaining under team control for another year, making him an appealing target for a team like the Angels that needs to strengthen their rotation without overspending.
In addition to pursuing Cortes, the Angels might consider re-signing Johnny Cueto, a veteran pitcher who is set to become a free agent. Although Cueto is approaching 39 years old, his experience could add valuable depth to the rotation.
While acquiring Cortes and potentially Cueto won’t solve all the Angels’ issues, these moves could provide a strong foundation for a more competitive pitching staff in the coming seasons. As the offseason approaches, the Angels have a clear opportunity to make significant improvements.
