Luis Severino stirred up some controversy among fans with comments that were perceived as insensitive by some after the New York Mets pitcher’s recent remarks.
The Mets are currently locked in a close battle for one of the three Wild Card spots in the National League. As of Monday’s games, they are just 1.5 games behind the final spot, trailing the Atlanta Braves. The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks are also ahead of Atlanta in the standings.

Before the Mets’ game against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, Severino spoke with reporters. The New York Post’s Mike Puma asked him about Braves third baseman Austin Riley’s recent injury and mentioned that Diamondbacks slugger Ketel Marte was also headed to the injured list.
In response, Severino jokingly asked if there was any news about someone from the Padres landing on the IL as well.
I was talking to Luis Severino about Austin Riley's injury and what it means for the Braves and then mentioned Ketel Marte went on the IL for Arizona (Severino hadn't heard).
Said Severino: "How about San Diego? Nothing on San Diego?"

“How about San Diego? Nothing on San Diego?” Severino asked Puma.
Reactions on social media platform X were divided. Some fans thought Severino’s comment was in poor taste, while others were shocked he made the remark at all. However, some defended Severino, arguing that his words were taken out of context by the media.
wishing injuries on other players is horrible! hope the mets miss the playoffs now!

Puma later clarified that Severino’s comment was made in a “very tongue-in-cheek” manner.
Luis Severino's "what about San Diego" quote is going to be used to portray this narrative that he is hoping for guys to get hurt and it's really bothersome how often non-native English speakers get one-liners taken out of context in the media

It was very tongue in cheek. … Maybe it doesn't read that way for some. https://t.co/FtxHRgNs1l

Despite the controversy surrounding Severino, Monday turned out to be a great night for Mets fans, as catcher Francisco Alvarez hit a walk-off home run against the Orioles, delivering one of the most memorable celebrations of the season.
