The Seattle Mariners fought their way to the top of the AL West, claiming the division title and setting their sights on a postseason run.

But how far they go won’t matter much if they can’t keep together the roster that got them there. The priority this offseason will be retaining their core while also building around it.

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the Mariners’ first move will likely be an attempt to bring back All-Star first baseman Josh Naylor.

“The Mariners will make every attempt to sign Naylor as a free agent this winter,” Nightengale reported, noting that Naylor has been a driving force in Seattle’s success.

He added that the Cincinnati Reds nearly traded for Naylor at the deadline before the Diamondbacks sent him to Seattle, where he quickly became a difference-maker. Since joining the Mariners, Naylor has posted a .299 average with nine homers, 33 RBIs, an .831 OPS, and an impressive 19-for-19 mark on stolen bases.

Overall this year, Naylor has hit .295/.353/.462/.816 with 20 home runs, 92 RBIs, and 30 steals between Arizona and Seattle. The Mariners will need to recognize just how crucial he has been and ensure he remains part of their future.
