The Philadelphia Phillies are in wait-and-see mode as they prepare for the MLB postseason. Having secured a first-round bye thanks to their strong regular season, their main focus right now is chasing a World Series title.
Still, the front office is already laying groundwork for the offseason. One intriguing possibility has surfaced involving New York Mets power-hitting first baseman Pete Alonso.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report floated the idea of Philadelphia pursuing Alonso if Kyle Schwarber departs in free agency:
“What if they fail to re-sign Kyle Schwarber, though, resulting in a void at DH to be filled by Harper and/or Castellanos? Doesn’t Alonso’s 158 home runs since the beginning of 2022 become the logical top target to backfill the 187 home runs Schwarber has hit during that time?”
Alonso turned in another strong campaign for the Mets in 2025, appearing in all 162 games while hitting .272/.347/.525 with 38 homers, 126 RBI, and an .871 OPS. At 30 years old, he still profiles as a middle-of-the-order threat for years to come.
Ideally, Philadelphia keeps Schwarber, but if he leaves, Alonso could be a powerful fallback option. For now, it’s just speculation. The Phillies’ attention is on October baseball, but this storyline will be worth monitoring once the offseason begins.
