The St. Louis Cardinals find themselves at a turning point: continue pushing to contend or commit to a full teardown. With Chaim Bloom now running the front office, the latter feels increasingly likely.

If the Cards choose that path, trading off veterans would be the first step. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, All-Star second baseman Brendan Donovan—who still has two years of arbitration left—could be among the first to go.

Cardinals Brendan Donovan shows off defensive skills

“Infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan was the Cardinals’ lone All-Star this season, but with only two years of club control remaining, he looms as a prime trade candidate. As good an example as Donovan is for the Cardinals’ younger players, Donovan might depart as a free agent by the time the team is good again.

One of the Cardinals’ problems the past two years is that they’ve gone only halfway in rebuilding efforts. And it hasn’t worked,” Rosenthal explained.

Donovan has put together a strong campaign, hitting .281/.348/.407/.755 with 26 doubles, 10 homers, and 60 RBIs—production that would appeal to plenty of contenders.

If Donovan is dealt, it could trigger a larger sell-off. Other established stars like Nolan Arenado might also be moved, allowing St. Louis to reset around younger talent such as Ivan Herrera, Alec Burleson, and Mason Wynn.

The hope is that this winter, the Cardinals fully commit to the process and flip veterans for prospects, laying the foundation for a future contender.
